Math Lesson: Standard Deviation

The following Lesson Plan was created to be used synchronously or asynchronously in an Online Mathematics course at a community college.

Computing the Standard Deviation in Statistics presents a difficulty for students when they begin to work on their own. By slowly working to independently solve problems with several animated and interactive examples, students can tackle this advanced topic.

The lesson begins with an animated example of finding the Standard Deviation of a set of test scores. The steps are listed with the computations for each filling in as the students work along. The lesson is intended to be paused as needed and can be backed up and repeated as well.

After demonstrating an understanding of the steps to find the Standard Deviation, students are presented with further examples. The beginning example starts with step-by-step interactive directions and gradually works toward finding the Standard Deviation independently in the last example.
